Designing motion that works on mute

Most social video is watched without sound. If the message only lands with audio, most of your audience never receives it.

Key takeaways

  • Treat audio as an enhancement, never as the delivery mechanism.
  • The first two seconds carry the whole piece — design for them first.
  • Design inside the 9:16 safe area, not as an afterthought crop.

Design for the crop first

The mistake is designing a 16:9 spot and then cropping a vertical version. Key text ends up clipped, faces leave frame, and the composition collapses.

Designing the vertical version first forces the message to the centre of frame, where it survives every platform.

The first two seconds

Attention is decided almost immediately. A logo animation, a large legible claim, or a single clear movement has to carry the opening.

Anything that requires a viewer to wait and see is a luxury you rarely get.

Captions are design, not an accessory

Burn-in captions should be typographically considered: safe margins, a readable size at phone scale, and contrast that holds over moving footage.

That means designing the caption layer as part of the composition rather than dropping auto-captions on top.
