Fix the foundations before the content

Content published on a technically weak site is writing cheques the crawl cannot cash. The order of operations that makes SEO compounding instead of random.

Key takeaways

  • Crawlers and assistants both reward sites that are cheap to read.
  • Canonicals, a clean sitemap and honest 404s come before any new writing.
  • Structured data is translation for machines — most sites skip it.

The crawl is a budget

Every site gets a finite amount of crawler attention. Duplicate URL versions, stale sitemaps and dead routes that answer softly all spend it. When we relaunched our own site, the legacy routes from the previous business were still surfacing in search weeks later — not because the new pages were weak, but because the old ones had to die loudly, with real 404s, before the crawl budget moved.

That is the pattern in miniature: the fix was structural, and it unlocked everything published after it.

The foundation checklist

None of this is glamorous, which is exactly why it gets skipped. All of it is checkable in an afternoon.

  • One canonical domain, with every other version redirecting to it
  • Self-referencing canonical tags on every indexable page
  • A sitemap that lists only pages that exist — no ghosts from the last site
  • Real 404/410 responses for dead routes, never a soft 404
  • Organization, Service and FAQ schema on the pages that carry them

Then content compounds

On a clean foundation, each new page lands with the trust the site has already earned, and search picks it up in days. On a messy one, every page starts from zero and the same twelve fixes get re-discovered each quarter.

Write after the checklist, not instead of it.
