A ranking is a link below an answer. A citation is being the answer. When a buyer asks an assistant what something costs, how it works or who provides it, the reply names two or three sources — and everyone else on page one is invisible.
The uncomfortable part: the cited source is frequently not the top-ranking result. Assistants assemble answers from passages, not pages, which changes what the machine is looking for.

A page is extractable when a passage can be lifted out of it and still be a complete, correct answer with its context intact. That is a writing and structure problem before it is an SEO problem.

- Answer-shaped paragraphs: a claim, then the support, in two sentences
- Entity and service schema, so machines know what you do without guessing
- Numbers with units and dates, because context-free figures cannot be quoted safely
Start measuring it
Ask the questions your buyers actually ask — the pricing question, the comparison question, the how-does-it-work question — across a few assistants, and log who gets cited. Do it monthly; the sources move.
Then audit the pages that win. The gap between what they do structurally and what your page does is the roadmap. It is usually shorter than anyone expects.
